Our Volunteer Of The Month
Coralee Kristein

She doesn’t only volunteer out at the center she also fosters kittens at her home. She put a hundred and one percent in to volunteering and that is why we are recognizing her as the volunteer of the month.
Volunteer Program
Second Chance Rescue Center depends heavily on the success of their Volunteer Program. Our Small Staff Cares for more than 200 animals a day. Volunteers play an important role in reducing the animals’ stress level while in the shelter environment. Note: All volunteers must be 18 or older the volunteer on there own, if not 18 you can still help out. Look under the community service section
Volunteer Program Requirements:
-
Desire to support animal care, ability to assess animal needs.
-
Commitment to a minimum of one year volunteering at SCRC with a minimum of 3 hours per month
-
Attend a volunteer orientation held the 1st Saturday of each month and view the orientation video
-
Minimum of 18 years of age
-
14-17 year olds have the opportunity to volunteer if they are accompanied by a parent. Note if under 18 you must have a parent accompany you at all times.
-
Volunteers 18 years of age or greater must be able to work independently and effectively communicate with the staff and public, some positions require the physical ability to lift at least 50 lbs and stand for long periods of time
Volunteering at Second Chance Rescue Center allows you to meet new people with similar interests, acquire volunteer experience for future endeavors, enhance the quality of life for the pets in our center, network for the animals awaiting adoption and overall make a difference for the homeless animals in our community.
Volunteer Positions:
Canine Companion: If you have energy and a good pair of sneakers, this dog exercise program is for you. Just come out to the center when your schedule allows, walk dogs, play frisbee in the yard or soak up the sun in on a quiet bench with a canine companion.
Feline Companion: If you enjoy working with cats and kittens, this cat socialization program is for you. Take a cat out of a kennel (one at a time) where they are able to stretch, scratch a post, explore and play.
Fundraising and Special Events: Represent SCRC at fundraisers and special events that bring awareness to the center which in turn helps our animals find forever homes.
Animal Ambassador: Help pick up pets at SCRC and take them to Petco, Petsmart & special events. You’ll promote the animals, explain the adoption process and market SCRC to the public.
Headstart Dog Training Specialist*: Work with dogs who exhibit behavior challenges or do not show well in their kennel. Up to 3 dogs at a time benefit from specially trained volunteers who teach them basic obedience using positive reinforcement and treats.
SCRC Groomer*: center pets often need grooming to make them more appealing to potential adopters, volunteers can help by bathing and brushing cats & dogs.
Foster Care*: some animals are too young, sick or unsocial to go up for adoption right away, they need temporary care in a foster home & you can help.
*Denotes positions that require additional training, contact the Director of Volunteers & Special Events for details.
SCRC Community Service Projects
A SCRC Community Service Project is perfect for groups, children under the age of 18, and individuals seeking a short term volunteer opportunity. Some project ideas include:
Hold a fundraiser to benefit SCRC!
Financial donations allow us to use your donation where it is needed most. Whether it is to provide emergency medical treatment to an injured animal, buy supplies for managing our facility, or purchase food & vaccinations for daily pet care. Some groups have held book and bake sales, car washes, carnivals, and talent shows, but the possibilities are endless. Be creative and be certain to let us know the who, what, where and when for your event by contacting the Director of Volunteers & Special Events.
Organize a supply drive!
SCRC is always in need of supplies used for animal care, facility cleaning and office operations. View our SCRC Wish List for ideas on what to collect. From pet food to laundry detergent and even copy paper, the basic essentials help us run the facility on a daily basis.
Make blankets to keep cats or dogs cozy!
Cut out a piece of double-sided fleece that is 24 inches square for cats & kittens or 48 inches square for puppies. Cut 1 inch strips of fringe on 4 sides, stack the two squares of fleece and sew the edges or tie the fringe.
Make toys to entertain cats & kittens!
Decorate empty plastic eggs or ping pong balls with permanent makers. These simple rolling toys are popular entertainment for center cats & kitten.
Make chew toys for the small animals!
Take empty toilet paper tubes or cut up empty paper towel or wrapping paper tubes, then stuff them with Timothy Hay (found at pet stores). Our rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters enjoy these tasty chewing toys/treats.
Go green, recycle things in your home!
-
Organize a newspaper drive. Newspapers are used to line the bottom of animal cages. Please remove glossy circulars and stack the newspapers neatly in paper grocery bags. Please do not shred newspaper.
-
Collect shredded office paper, which is used to make puppy and small animal cages more comfortable. (Please note that we can’t use cross-cut shredded paper, only the kind with larger strips).
-
Keep clean plastic shopping bags to be used by our dog walkers for cleanup outdoors.
-
Recycle your aluminum cans and bring them to the center. We have a recycling company who picks up the cans from a designated kennel in our parking lot and all the money from recycling goes to SCRC pets.
-
Bring us your old blankets and towels. We can put them to use for cat beds, grooming and cleaning up after shelter animals.
-
Any donated items can be brought to the customer service counter during regular business hours; no appointment is necessary. Groups doing a community service project for SCRC are welcome to schedule a tour at the time they deliver donations. Tours last approximately one hour. Contact the Director of Volunteers & Special Events to schedule a tour!
