Contest Rules:
- Enter the “Why I Love My Owner Essay Contest” for a $10 donation to Second Chance Rescue Center. Simply send us an essay of 100 words or less written by your pet explaining why they love their owner.
- Entries must be received at Second Chance Rescue Center by Wednesday, February 10, 2010. Be certain to include your name, address, phone number(s) and email address with your essay.
- The “Why I Love My Owner Essay Contest” is a fundraiser for Second Chance Rescue Center pets. Prize package sponsors include: The Attic Bar & Grill, Envive, Ernie November, Holiday Inn City Centre, Sioux Falls Stampede Hockey and Stewart School.
- Essay Contest winners will be selected from essays received that best convey the theme “Why I Love My Owner.” Judging will be conducted by a committee of community members & staff. All judge’s decisions are final.
- The Winner will be notified by phone on or before February 14, 2010 & prize package can be picked up at Second Chance Rescue Center after that date.
- All entries become the property of Second Chance Rescue Center. Entries cannot be returned. Winner must agree to publicity photos if requested.
National Prevent a Litter Month February is National Prevent a Litter Month to raise public awareness of the necessity of spaying and neutering dogs, cats, puppies and kittens to ward off the vast numbers of litters that arrive at Second Chance each spring. A single unaltered female cat, her mate and all of their offspring can produce 420,000 cats in 7 years. A single unaltered female dog, her mate and their offspring can produce 67,000 dogs in 6 years. In the US each year 4 million unwanted cats and dogs are euthanized. The needless suffering and euthanasia of millions of pets is easily prevented if each family spays and neuters their own pets.
Meet & Greet at PetSmart Saturday February 6th Saturday, February 6th come say hello as we show off a few of our adoptable friends at PetSmart in Sioux Falls. This is a time where our animals can get out of the shelter for a while and greet the public. They enjoy this outing and the public really enjoys seeing their smiling faces.

During Spay Day USA, veterinarians and their staff, animal welfare professionals, business owners and concerned citizens join forces nationwide to spay or neuter as many animals as possible. They promote spay/neuter as an essential component of good pet health care, in addition to being an effective and humane means of decreasing the euthanasia of homeless animals in shelters. Opening of Man's Best Friend Exhibit Old Courthouse Museum A new Man's Best Friend exhibit has opened at the Old Courthouse Museum. The exhibit chronicles the 14,000 year relationship between humans and dogs.
